Gloucestershire’s David Payne has been named the 2024 Vitality Blast Player of the Year, capping off a remarkable season that saw him lead the team to their first ever T20 Blast title. Payne, who finished top of the most valuable player rankings, took a competition-tying 33 wickets, a feat last achieved by Alfonso Thomas in 2010.
The left-arm paceman’s incredible bowling performance was instrumental in Gloucestershire’s unexpected victory. They entered the knockout stages as underdogs, having never won the title in 20 years of competition. However, a series of dramatic victories, including a thrilling quarter-final win over Birmingham Bears and back-to-back wins in the semi-final and final, saw them lift the trophy at Edgbaston.
Payne, who switched to a white-ball contract in 2022, expressed his joy at achieving his goal of winning a major trophy with Gloucestershire. “I’ve never felt better with my bowling,” he said. “It’s a strange feeling because a lot of the Somerset guys are my Welsh Fire team-mates in the Hundred. They and Surrey have set the bar high in T20 and we take immense pride from beating them.”
Payne also praised the leadership of his captain, Jack Taylor, who he described as “brilliant” and “outstanding”. He attributed their success to the team’s belief and confidence, which grew with every victory. “You need your big players to stand up on nights like this, which is what happened,” he said. “But all through the campaign our players have delivered performances. I could go through the side. Everyone has contributed.”
Gloucestershire’s historic win is a testament to their resilience and determination, and Payne’s impressive individual achievements are a fitting reward for his dedication and skill. His incredible form, combined with the team’s collective effort, has cemented Gloucestershire’s place as a force to be reckoned with in the world of T20 cricket.
