**Maiduguri, Borno State:** Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has paid a sympathy visit to Borno State following the devastating floods that hit the region. The floods, which began after the Alau Dam overflowed due to heavy rains, have been described as the worst in 30 years.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), over 23,000 households have been affected by the rising waters, with 70% of Maiduguri submerged at its peak. The floods caused significant damage, including the destruction of homes, schools, commercial centers, and places of worship. The Shehu of Borno’s palace, the state secretariat, post office, cemetery, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital were also affected.
The devastating impact of the floods has led to the displacement of many residents, with President Bola Tinubu urging immediate evacuation of affected communities. He also directed relevant agencies to expedite rescue efforts. Vice President Kashim Shettima also visited the state to assess the situation and offer support.
Atiku Abubakar, expressing his condolences to the affected residents, arrived in Maiduguri on Sunday. He posted about the visit on X (formerly Twitter), stating his goal of showing solidarity with the people of Borno State.
