The UK government has announced it will not fund the redevelopment of Casement Park in Belfast, dashing hopes of hosting Euro 2028 matches at the derelict GAA stadium. The decision, communicated by Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn and culture secretary Lisa Nandy, cited “a significant risk” that the stadium wouldn’t be ready in time.
The GAA and Irish government had pledged contributions to the project, but spiraling costs and delays created a funding gap. The UK government’s cited cost of £400 million (€473 million) for the project was disputed by GAA president Jarlath Burns, who stated the organization’s estimates were significantly lower.
Taoiseach Simon Harris expressed disappointment and confirmed the Irish government’s €50 million pledge remains in place. He also announced he will meet with the GAA next week to discuss future plans.
Despite the setback, both the GAA and the Northern Ireland Executive expressed continued commitment to rebuilding the stadium. First Minister Michelle O’Neill emphasized the project’s importance as a “heart of the GAA in Ulster” and a key component of the Northern Irish economy.
Local politicians, including former All-Ireland winner Justin McNulty, have criticized the UK government’s decision and called for swift action to begin construction. The GAA remains determined to see the project through, stating their focus now shifts to securing funding for the stadium’s rebuild.
