Sun Sep 15 12:00:55 UTC 2024: ## US Oil and Gas Production Booms Despite Climate Concerns: A Look at Trump and Biden’s Influence

**Washington D.C.** – The United States is currently producing more oil and natural gas than ever before, surpassing any other country. However, the roles of the Trump and Biden administrations in this surge are more complex than their public rhetoric might suggest.

While former President Trump championed fossil fuel expansion and President Biden focuses on clean energy, both administrations took steps both supporting and restricting oil and gas drilling.

Under Trump, the federal government leased more land for drilling in Alaska and Utah, waived environmental reviews, and loosened regulations to expedite pipeline construction. However, he later reversed a policy allowing offshore drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coasts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, likely due to political pressure.

The Biden administration has focused on reducing methane leaks from natural gas pipelines, increasing royalties for production on federal lands, and issuing a moratorium on new federal leases for oil and gas. However, it also approved the massive Willow project in Alaska and included provisions for oil and gas leasing and carbon capture incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

While the Biden administration signed permits for drilling, much of the increased production is a result of leases granted under Trump’s administration. Global events also play a significant role. The COVID-19 pandemic decreased oil demand, while the Russia-Ukraine war boosted European demand for natural gas.

However, a major driving force for the industry’s success is technological innovation. The advent of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling in the early 2000s opened up previously inaccessible reserves, leading to a surge in production since 2009.

Coal production, on the other hand, has been steadily declining since 2008, driven by both economic factors and government policies. The decrease in coal production, along with the growth of renewable energy and increased efficiency in some technologies, has contributed to a decline in US carbon dioxide emissions despite the increase in fossil fuel production.

While the actions of presidents have an impact, the major factors driving the surge in oil and gas production are increased production efficiency, global demand, and the lower cost of natural gas compared to coal.
