Mon Sep 16 05:01:09 UTC 2024: ## Arvind Kejriwal Resigns as Delhi CM, Triggering Early Elections

**New Delhi:** In a dramatic turn of events, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation on Sunday, setting the stage for early elections in the national capital. Kejriwal stated that he would step down within two days and called for a meeting of AAP MLAs to select his successor. While former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia is not in the running, Atishi is emerging as the top contender, known for her extensive portfolio responsibilities in the government.

Kejriwal’s decision follows his arrest in connection with the alleged liquor scam, a move he claims was politically motivated. His resignation comes amidst ongoing political turmoil, with the BJP and Congress reacting to the development with varying degrees of approval.

The Election Commission of India, however, may not be able to hold early elections in November as the state is currently undergoing the annual summary revision of electoral rolls. This process is scheduled to be completed by January 6th, 2025.

The BJP has claimed that the people of Delhi had already rejected Kejriwal’s leadership, citing the party’s loss in the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the Congress, while welcoming the resignation, criticized Kejriwal for delaying the decision and suggested that it should have been made six months ago.

As the AAP prepares to select its new leader, the political landscape in Delhi is in flux. With the party set to face fresh elections, the coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the future of Delhi’s governance.
