**Lagos, Nigeria** – The Federal Government has launched a program to convert up to 10,000 commercial vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) in its first phase. The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) aims to reduce transportation costs and improve air quality by providing free CNG conversion kits and services.
The program kicked off on Saturday in Lagos, with a focus on converting 1,000 vehicles per week in the initial phase. The long-term goal is to convert one million vehicles by 2027, according to Olayinka Rufai, PCNGI Strategic Project Adviser.
Rufai emphasized the economic benefits of targeting commercial vehicles, which transport large numbers of people and contribute significantly to daily transport costs. He also stressed the environmental advantages of CNG, noting that it burns cleaner than petrol, resulting in significantly lower emissions.
The initiative has already begun distributing free CNG kits in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and the Federal Capital Territory. Each vehicle undergoes a compatibility inspection to ensure it can safely accommodate the CNG conversion kit.
The PCNGI is encouraging private investors to establish CNG stations nationwide to support the initiative. With the program expected to reduce transportation costs by 40%, the initiative is seen as a significant step towards a cleaner, more affordable transportation system in Nigeria.
