**JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN** – South Sudan has announced a two-year extension to its transitional period, pushing back national elections to December 22, 2026. The decision, announced on Friday, comes after a previous postponement from February 2023 to December 2024.
The government cited the need for more time to implement key provisions of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), including finalizing the permanent constitution and achieving national consensus. Presidential Adviser on National Security Tut Gatluak emphasized that this extension would allow for the completion of critical tasks necessary for a successful election.
The extension follows concerns about the country’s economic situation, which has hampered preparations for the elections. South Sudan is grappling with unpaid civil servants, disruptions in oil exports, and security concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in neighboring Sudan.
Despite these challenges, the government remains committed to implementing the R-ARCSS, including its provisions on governance reforms. They expressed optimism about the extended period, stating that it would provide time to mobilize resources and ensure the agreement’s effective implementation.
The decision has been met with mixed reactions. While some welcome the extension, citing the ongoing challenges, others express concern about the potential for further delays and the impact on democratic processes.
