**New Delhi:** In a significant move aimed at reclaiming India’s heritage and shedding colonial baggage, the Indian government has renamed Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as ‘Sri Vijaya Puram’.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision on Friday, stating that it was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to free the nation from colonial imprints. “It is also the place that hosted the first unfurling of our Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ji and also the cellular jail in which Veer Savarkar Ji and other freedom fighters struggled for an independent nation,” Shah added.

Port Blair was originally named after Captain Archibald Blair, a lieutenant in the British East India Company’s naval force. It later served as a key penal colony for the British, particularly after the 1857 Indian Rebellion.

However, the renaming reflects the government’s commitment to decolonization, a process that goes beyond simply removing physical symbols of colonial rule. It aims to erase the colonial imprint from the psyche of the nation and its people.

This move is seen as a symbolic step towards reclaiming India’s rich history and cultural identity. While the process of decolonization is ongoing and requires long-term efforts, the government believes that such steps are crucial in shaping a truly independent and self-reliant India.

The government has taken other measures in the past to decolonize India, including banning the use of colonial-era red beacons on cars of politicians and bureaucrats, and replacing the colonial briefcase with a traditional “bahi khata” for carrying the annual budget to Parliament.

The renaming of Port Blair as ‘Sri Vijaya Puram’ signifies the Indian government’s commitment to reclaiming its past and shaping a future free from colonial legacies.
