Sat Sep 14 17:55:58 UTC 2024: ## Controversial Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori Buried Amidst Supporters and Controversy

LIMA, Peru – Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, a figure who polarized the nation, was laid to rest on Saturday following three days of national mourning. Thousands of supporters lined up to pay their respects to the politician, whose legacy remains deeply contested.

Fujimori, who served as president from 1990 to 2000, died of cancer at the age of 86. He spent much of the past fifteen years in prison for crimes against humanity, including the murders of 25 people during two massacres and the kidnapping of a journalist.

Despite the controversies, Fujimori’s supporters remember him for his economic reforms and his role in defeating the Shining Path, a violent communist group. His administration saw Peru’s economy recover from hyperinflation. However, his presidency was marked by an authoritarian turn in 1992 when he dissolved Congress and the Supreme Court, undermining Peruvian democracy and leading to human rights abuses.

President Dina Boluarte, who saluted Fujimori at a ceremony in the presidential palace, remained silent about his divisive legacy. Fujimori’s eldest daughter, Keiko, a prominent politician and leader of the conservative Fuerza Popular party, was among the mourners. She described her father as “free from the hate and vengeance of those who did not forgive him for rescuing us from hunger and terror.”

Fujimori’s death reignites the debate surrounding his controversial presidency. His legacy will continue to be debated as the nation reflects on the complex and contested figure who profoundly impacted Peruvian history.
