**McHenry County, IL** – The lines between rural and urban living are blurring, and with it, a growing conflict between farmers and motorists. As suburban sprawl pushes into agricultural areas, the shared use of roads becomes a safety concern for both parties.

Local farmers, like Dan Ziller and Renee Deterding, express their frustration with impatient drivers who fail to recognize the dangers posed by large farm equipment. They emphasize the need for drivers to slow down and give farm vehicles adequate space, especially when passing.

Ziller, a dairy, livestock, and grain farmer near Huntley, has been actively working with local high schools and driver’s education programs to educate young drivers about safe practices around farm equipment. He employs a hands-on approach, allowing students to experience the limited visibility from inside farm machinery.

Deterding, who farms near St. Louis, shares Ziller’s concerns, highlighting the increasing risk of accidents as young drivers learn to operate farm equipment on increasingly busy roads. Both farmers implore drivers to be mindful of the size and maneuverability of farm vehicles and to exercise caution when sharing the road.

“We don’t want to be there, but because of the development, we no longer have country roads to move machinery on because everyone else is on them, too,” says Ziller. “We just need to all work together.”
