In a significant move to erase colonial legacies, India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the renaming of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to “Sri Vijaya Puram”. The change, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, aims to symbolize the victory achieved in India’s freedom struggle and the islands’ crucial role in the fight for independence.
Shah highlighted the islands’ historical significance, mentioning their use as a naval base for the Chola Empire and their role as the site of the first unfurling of the Indian flag by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He also noted the Cellular Jail, where freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar were imprisoned, underscoring the islands’ connection to the fight for independence.
Port Blair, previously named after Archibald Blair, a British East India Company officer, was established as a penal colony in 1789. Its history as a British penal colony is still visible in the Cellular Jail, which is now a memorial to Indian Independence activists.
This renaming follows a similar move last year when Prime Minister Modi renamed 21 Andaman and Nicobar islands after Paramvir Chakra awardees to commemorate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary.
The change in name is expected to be met with mixed reactions, with some supporting the move as a symbolic gesture of national pride and others expressing concern about the loss of historical connection to the original name. However, it undoubtedly marks a significant step in India’s ongoing efforts to reclaim its history and identity.
