Fri Sep 13 07:35:58 UTC 2024: ## UK to Ban Junk Food Ads Before 9pm Starting in 2025
The UK government has confirmed a ban on junk food advertisements on television and online will come into effect on October 1st, 2025. The ban aims to combat childhood obesity by restricting ads for “less healthy” food and drinks before 9pm on TV and completely prohibiting paid-for online ads.
The ban was first outlined in the Labour Party’s manifesto during the recent general election. Health Minister Andrew Gwynne stated that the government is committed to tackling the issue of childhood obesity “head-on” and without delay. He believes the restriction will protect children from exposure to advertising that influences their dietary choices at a young age.
The government is currently finalizing definitions for “less healthy” products, but they are expected to include those high in fat, salt, or sugar. While some products, such as baby formula, infant cereal, and diet replacement products, will be exempt from the ban, the government plans to provide further guidance on the scope of the restrictions.
The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) has welcomed the ban, highlighting its importance in addressing childhood nutrition and building a healthier future for the next generation. The move is expected to have a significant impact on the marketing strategies of food and beverage companies, potentially shifting consumer behavior and reducing the prevalence of unhealthy food choices amongst children.
