LOGAN, UTAH – A dedicated group of Utah State University students have been camping out near Maverik Stadium since Wednesday night, eager to secure their spots in the student section for Saturday’s highly anticipated football game against the University of Utah.
Up to 30 students have been braving the elements, setting up tents and bringing supplies to sustain them throughout the week. Some have even brought projectors to relive the excitement of past games.
The students, fueled by a mix of tradition, friendship, and their love for the Aggies, describe the experience as a mix of camaraderie and “controlled insanity.” One senior, Easton Roos, even compared the experience to a “weird cult” that’s hard to resist once you’ve started.
For many, the campout is a ritual they partake in for every home football and basketball game. The desire to be at the front of the student section, where the energy is electrifying, is a key motivator.
Senior Logan Baker said, “It’s such a different experience in the front. The energy is so different. You meet cool people. You start making friends who share the same interests.”
Cousins and USU sophomores Nolan Smith and Leini Winward, however, are more focused on carrying on a family legacy of Aggie pride. “It’s kind of a long-going thing. It’s not just something we decided to start,” Smith said, adding that while he doesn’t know if their family members camped out to this extent, their legacy of Aggie spirit is strong.
Winward balances her commitment to the university with her studies, saying, “Obviously school takes up a lot of time but everything up here is super fun.”
As the game day approaches, the student campout outside Maverik Stadium serves as a testament to the dedication and passion of Aggie fans, showcasing a unique and spirited tradition that adds another layer of excitement to the already anticipated rivalry game.
