GIRARD – The Humboldt High School cross country team kicked off their season with a strong showing at the Girard Invitational on Thursday, showcasing improvement and personal bests.

The Cubs competed against several schools they will likely face at the regional level, providing valuable insight into their training needs moving forward. Coach Eric Carlson commented, “We saw some schools we will likely run against at regionals, and we saw all of our league schools. Going forward, we know what we need to do to adjust our training and keep getting better.”

On the girls side, Anna Heisler and Tori Melendez led the charge, earning medals for their 15th and 18th place finishes respectively. Teghen Jaro and Josey Ellis also set new personal records.

For the boys, Brigg Shannon paced the team with a time of 21 minutes and 24 seconds, securing 41st place. Emmitt Carson shaved nearly two minutes off his personal best, finishing in 23:37.

Aspen Wimsett, an eighth grader, had a standout performance, earning a fourth-place medal and breaking her own personal record by a staggering 2:16 in the 2-mile race. Kara Culbertson also impressed, achieving an eighth-place finish and dropping almost 6 minutes off her previous best time.

The Cubs are set to compete in a “sprint” meet at Caney on Tuesday, with middle schoolers running a 1-mile course and high school athletes tackling a 1.5-mile distance.
