Sat Sep 14 14:57:51 UTC 2024: ## Leclerc Takes Pole in Baku, Verstappen Struggles as Title Fight Heats Up
**BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP)** – Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, setting the stage for a potentially dramatic race as Max Verstappen qualified only sixth and Lando Norris a disappointing 17th.
Leclerc, who won the previous race in Italy, was fastest by a comfortable margin of 0.321 seconds over McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, with Carlos Sainz Jr. rounding out the top three for Ferrari. The pole position marked a strong comeback for Leclerc, who had a crash during Friday’s practice session.
Norris, who sits second in the championship standings, had a disappointing qualifying session. Despite appearing to be on track for a strong performance, he was forced to slow down due to a yellow flag for a slow-moving Esteban Ocon, ultimately missing out on a top 15 finish by a mere 0.137 seconds.
“There’s a long race ahead, we have some good tires in the bank, I’m still hopeful we can get a good result. I think the car is quick. Bit frustrating, but nothing I can do,” Norris said.
The qualifying results could have a significant impact on the championship race. Verstappen, who hasn’t won in six races, will face an uphill battle from his sixth-place starting position. Meanwhile, Norris’ struggles leave him with an uphill task to challenge Verstappen for the title, particularly with teammate Piastri starting much higher on the grid.
The race also saw a bizarre incident involving Williams driver Alex Albon, who stopped on his way out of the pits to remove a cooling component left in his air intake by the team. Albon qualified 10th but faces an investigation from the stewards.
Sunday’s race promises to be a thrilling affair, with Leclerc looking to build on his recent strong performances and Verstappen needing a strong drive to keep his championship hopes alive.
