**Baku, Azerbaijan:** Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday, putting Ferrari in prime position for a strong showing in Sunday’s race. The Monegasque driver clocked a blistering 1:41.365s, edging out McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and teammate Carlos Sainz.
The qualifying session was marked by a surprising shock for Lando Norris, who finished a disappointing 17th, failing to even make it to Q2. This result will likely be a major setback for the Brit and his team, McLaren, in their bid for the 2024 Drivers’ Championship.
“There’s a long race ahead, we have some good tires in the bank, I’m still hopeful we can get a good result,” said Norris after the qualifying, admitting to the frustration but remaining optimistic.
Max Verstappen, the defending champion, continued his recent struggles, qualifying in sixth. His teammate Sergio Perez, however, managed to secure fourth place ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, who has been struggling for pace in recent races.
With Leclerc on pole, Ferrari will be looking to capitalize on their strong performance and challenge Red Bull for the Constructors’ Championship lead. The Italian team currently trails Red Bull by just 39 points.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be held on Sunday, with the spotlight on whether Leclerc can convert his pole into a race victory and whether Norris can recover from his disappointing qualifying to challenge for points.
