**LONDON** – The National Gallery in London is showcasing three of Vincent van Gogh’s iconic “Sunflowers” paintings together for the first time in a major exhibition titled “Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers.” The exhibit focuses on the Dutch painter’s work from his two-year stay in the south of France, where his art took on a new vibrancy and boldness.
The exhibition features around 50 paintings and drawings, including renowned masterpieces like “Starry Night” and some never before seen publicly. The “Sunflowers” triptych is a particular highlight, featuring two versions of the famous flower series alongside “The Lullaby,” a painting depicting a seated woman.
According to exhibition co-curator Christopher Riopelle, Van Gogh envisioned the three works as a comforting display for sailors at sea, inspired by his desire to create something “consoling in life.” The “Sunflowers,” with their vibrant yellow and blue backgrounds, flank “The Lullaby” in a room with yellow walls, creating a striking visual impact.
The exhibit delves into Van Gogh’s fascination with the landscapes of southern France, showcasing his series on olive trees, mountains, and gardens. It aims to highlight the artist’s deep commitment to nature, friends, family, and his artistic aspirations.
“He was not just a person tormented and suffering,” said Riopelle, emphasizing Van Gogh’s dedication to his art and his appreciation for beauty. “He was a person deeply committed to the beauty of nature, deeply committed to friends and family and deeply committed to establishing a career as an Avant-Garde artist.”
The “Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers” exhibition offers a fresh perspective on the artist’s vibrant and impactful work during his time in the south of France, and is sure to captivate art enthusiasts.
