**KUALA LUMPUR:** The Election Commission (EC) has issued a set of guidelines for prospective candidates in the upcoming Mahkota state by-election, scheduled for September 28th.
In a statement released on Thursday, EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak urged candidates to thoroughly review their nomination forms with the Returning Officer’s office or the Johor State Election Office before submitting them at the Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail in Kluang on Saturday.
The nomination period is between 9am and 10am, with candidates required to submit their papers to the Returning Officer. Ikmalrudin emphasized the importance of settling deposits early and bringing the payment receipt as proof on nomination day.
Candidates representing political parties must also provide an official letter authorizing their use of the party symbol during the nomination process.
The use of musical instruments or loudspeakers for political propaganda, including via vehicles, is strictly prohibited on Nomination Day and constitutes an offense under the Election Offences Act 1954.
Candidates who have paid the campaign material deposit must still adhere to local authority regulations. The EC has urged all candidates and political parties to comply with relevant laws, rules, codes of conduct, and directives from the EC, Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), and local authorities to ensure a smooth and orderly nomination process.
The Mahkota by-election is being held following the passing of the incumbent, Datuk Sharifah Azizah, on August 2nd. Early voting is set for September 24th.
