**WASHINGTON (Reuters)** – The Biden administration is set to meet with top technology executives on Thursday to discuss the infrastructure needs of artificial intelligence (AI), including data centers, power generation, and semiconductors.
The meeting, which will be held at the White House, will bring together CEOs from leading tech companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic with senior U.S. officials including National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, and National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard. Executives from major power companies will also attend.
The White House emphasizes President Biden and Vice President Harris’ commitment to strengthening U.S. leadership in AI by fostering responsible development and ensuring data centers are built within the U.S. The administration is also looking to secure the needed energy infrastructure to support the burgeoning AI sector, a challenge given the administration’s goal of decarbonizing the power sector by 2035.
“The meeting shows that the White House recognizes the priority of infrastructure to create jobs and help guarantee that the benefits of AI are widely distributed,” said an OpenAI spokesperson.
OpenAI, known for its generative AI model ChatGPT, believes that “infrastructure is destiny” and sees building additional infrastructure in the U.S. as critical for the country’s economic future.
The meeting will also focus on fostering public-private collaboration in advancing AI, addressing workforce needs related to the technology, and streamlining permitting processes.
The surge in demand for electricity by AI data centers has raised concerns about the strain on energy and metals industries. The White House is looking for solutions to ensure a secure supply chain for AI-related infrastructure.
The meeting is seen as a significant step towards ensuring the U.S. remains at the forefront of AI development and deployment, while also addressing concerns about its potential environmental impact.
