Thu Sep 12 00:06:00 UTC 2024: ## HBCU Students Engage in Presidential Debate Watch Party Hosted by Thurgood Marshall College Fund

**Washington, D.C.** – The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) hosted a presidential debate watch party and panel discussion for over 500 students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) on Tuesday, September 10th. The event, held at the Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C., coincided with TMCF’s Leadership Institute and provided a unique platform for students to engage with the election process.

Makayla Browne, a senior accounting major at the University of the Virgin Islands, emphasized the event’s inspirational atmosphere, stating, “Being around so many students that not only look like me but are trying to achieve the same goals as me was very inspiring.” The watch party included a panel discussion on voter registration and its importance, further engaging students in civic participation.

TMCF President & CEO Dr. Harry L. Williams highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “It was a unique opportunity for us to host this event for our students in the nation’s capital during a historic presidential election.” TMCF is encouraging its students to actively participate in the election process by registering to vote, confirming polling locations, and understanding voter ID laws.

The panel discussion featured prominent figures such as Dr. Wendy Osefo, Dr. Sesha Joi Moon, and Leslie R. Redmond, providing diverse perspectives on the presidential debate. The event concluded with a call for informed discussion and understanding of the issues at play in the election.

TMCF, established in 1987, is dedicated to supporting the Black college community through scholarships, capacity building, and research initiatives. The organization champions the importance of voting as a powerful tool for change and a fundamental right for the Black community.
