The Southland Stags suffered a 40-12 defeat against the unbeaten Wellington team in their latest National Provincial Championship match. Despite a committed performance, the Stags were outplayed by the competition leaders, who scored six tries to Southland’s two.
Southland’s attack showed promise, creating numerous scoring opportunities, but struggled with decision-making and accuracy against the strong Wellington defense. The Stags were particularly hampered by turnovers in the first half, playing into the wind and failing to retain possession. Wellington capitalized on these errors, leading 24-0 at halftime.
Despite a strong scrum performance in the second half, Southland’s lineout accuracy faltered, hindering their ability to mount a comeback. Captain Sean Withy again impressed on the blindside flank, while centre Isaac Te Tamaki showcased his attacking prowess and defensive capabilities, finishing off a well-constructed team try.
Replacement loose forward Hayden Michaels, playing his first game of the season, used his strength to score the Stags’ second try.
The Stags now face a demanding schedule, with their next match against Canterbury at home tomorrow evening. All Black prop Ethan de Groot is expected to return for the Stags, along with lock Mitchell Dunshea and loose forwards Blair Ryall and Dylan Nel.
The Stags will then travel to Palmerston North to face Manawatu on Wednesday night, marking the start of a challenging three-game stretch in 10 days.
Meanwhile, Southland’s youth teams experienced mixed results in their respective matches. The U19 team lost 24-46 to Canterbury, while the U18 Metro team suffered a 0-54 defeat to Otago Metro. The Country U18 side lost narrowly 26-33 to Otago Country, while the U18 Girls team fell 17-22 to Otago. The U16 Boys team secured a dominant 53-0 victory over Otago Country, while the Spikers U16 Boys lost 8-31 to Otago Metro.
