**New Delhi:** Two protesters were killed and over 20 police officers injured in a violent clash during an eviction drive in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district of Assam on Thursday. The incident occurred when police attempted to evict Bengali-speaking Muslim villagers who had reoccupied land previously cleared of encroachment.

The villagers, angered by the eviction attempt, attacked the police with stones, sticks, and sharp weapons. A police vehicle was also damaged in the assault. In response to the violence, police opened fire, injuring two protesters who were later pronounced dead at a district hospital. The deceased were identified as Jubahir Ali and Haider Ali.

Among the injured police officers were Sonapur circle officer Nitul Khataniar, deputy commissioner of police (East) Mrinal Deka, and officer-in-charge of Sonapur police station Hirak Jyoti Saikia. Witnesses reported over 50 individuals injured in the incident, with many receiving treatment at the district hospital.

Following the clash, additional security forces were deployed in the village, and senior civil and police officials arrived at the scene. While the situation has been brought under control, tensions remain high in the area. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation to prevent further unrest.
