**New Delhi:** The Telangana government has appealed to the Supreme Court against a recent High Court ruling that allows permanent residents of the state to be eligible for MBBS and BDS courses under the 85% local quota, even if they studied outside Telangana.
The High Court, in September, struck down a rule that denied admission to such students, arguing it violated their rights. The court directed the state government to establish clear guidelines for determining a student’s permanent residency, allowing them to be admitted based on merit.
The Telangana government, however, insists that students should only be considered local candidates if they have completed their intermediate education within the state. They have filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s interpretation of the rules.
The Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, has assured the government that the plea will be considered for listing, but has not yet scheduled a hearing date. The outcome of the appeal could significantly impact the admission process for medical courses in Telangana, potentially affecting the eligibility of a large number of students.
