**New Delhi, September 12, 2024:** Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Thursday. He was 72.
Yechury, a prominent figure in Indian politics, had been admitted to the hospital on August 19 with pneumonia-like symptoms. He was on respiratory support for the past few days.
The veteran leader, who was serving his third term as CPI(M) general secretary, was known for his sharp intellect, eloquent speeches, and ability to bridge political divides. He had served as a Rajya Sabha MP for two terms.
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum for Yechury, with leaders from various parties expressing their condolences and highlighting his contributions to public life.
President Droupadi Murmu described Yechury as a “distinct and influential voice” while Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded him as an “effective Parliamentarian.”
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, who shared a close friendship with Yechury, called him a “protector of the idea of India” and a “friend.”
Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi also recalled her friendship with Yechury, which began during the first term of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in 2004-09.
Yechury is survived by his wife, Seema Chishti, and two children, Danish and Akhila. His body will be kept at the CPI(M) headquarters in Delhi on September 14 for public viewing. Subsequently, it will be donated for medical research at AIIMS as per his wishes.
