**Kolkata, India** – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday offered to step down from her post, stating that she is solely focused on achieving justice for the victim of a brutal rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College. This dramatic announcement came after protesting doctors refused to meet with her, demanding a live telecast of the meeting.
The doctors, protesting the tragic incident, have been demanding swift action and a thorough investigation. The state government agreed to record the meeting, but the doctors insisted on live streaming, claiming it was necessary for transparency.
In a press briefing, Banerjee expressed disappointment and frustration, stating, “I am ready to resign. I am not concerned about the post. I want justice, I am only concerned about justice getting served.” She highlighted her efforts to engage with the doctors, waiting for three days despite their refusal to follow the Supreme Court’s order to return to duty.
“I tried my best to sit with the junior doctors,” she said. “I waited 3 days for them… Even when they didn’t accept the verdict of the Supreme Court, I waited 3 days with my highest officials… I apologize to the people of this country and the world who are supporting them (doctors), please give your support. I don’t have any problem. We want justice for the common people.”
Banerjee reiterated the state’s commitment to justice and highlighted that despite the doctors’ defiance, no disciplinary action has been taken. “We have to tolerate sometimes, it is our duty to tolerate,” she said.
The Chief Secretary, Manoj Pant, further clarified that the state government is committed to a fair and transparent dialogue with the doctors. “We have made recording arrangements so that the entire proceedings are well documented. There should be trust between the two parties. We want to listen to them,” he said.
The situation remains tense, with the doctors adamant about their demand for live streaming. The chief minister’s dramatic resignation offer underscores the gravity of the situation and the pressure mounting on the government to address the concerns of the protesting medical professionals.
