**Rome, Italy** – In a bid to manage the overwhelming influx of tourists and protect its cultural heritage, the city of Rome is implementing a reservation system for the iconic Trevi Fountain.
The popular tourist destination, famous for its baroque architecture and coin-tossing tradition, has been experiencing unprecedented crowds in recent years, leading to concerns about the fountain’s preservation and the quality of life for local residents.
According to Alessandro Onorato, Rome’s Deputy Mayor for Tourism, the city anticipates a record-breaking 50 million tourists this year, putting immense strain on the city’s infrastructure and resources.
The new reservation system aims to address the problem of overcrowding and misbehavior by some tourists, which has included jumping into the fountain and littering. Tourists will now need to make a reservation in advance and pay a symbolic entrance fee of 2 euros. This fee will be used to manage crowd flow and ensure the fountain’s protection. Roman residents will be granted free access.
The reservation system will also include designated routes for tourists approaching the fountain, ensuring a more organized and controlled experience.
The move is expected to improve the experience for tourists while simultaneously preserving the historic monument and ensuring the well-being of the city’s residents.
