Wed Sep 11 23:58:52 UTC 2024: ## Rare Signed Copy of the U.S. Constitution to be Auctioned for Millions

**Edenton, NC** – A signed copy of the U.S. Constitution, one of only eight surviving ratified copies, will be auctioned off on Sept. 28th by Brunk Auctions. The document, discovered in 2022 in an old filing cabinet in a North Carolina home, is expected to fetch a price far exceeding its $1 million starting bid.

This is the first sale of a similar document since 1891, making the event a historic occasion. The copy is one of the few signed by Charles Thomson, the Secretary of Congress at the time, who was tasked with sending copies to state legislatures.

“This simple-looking version is what started breathing life into the Constitution,” said auctioneer Andrew Brunk. “It is a cornerstone of our democracy, particularly at this time in our nation’s history,” added Seth Kaller, a historic document expert, describing the sale as a unique opportunity.

The document was found by homeowners preparing their 184-acre plantation for sale. The property, once owned by former Governor Samuel Johnston, was purchased by the state of North Carolina to be turned into a public historic site.

The auction is expected to attract significant interest, with the public given a chance to view the document at Federal Hall National Memorial in New York City on Sept. 13th. The “market will decide what the Constitution is worth to us today,” noted Kaller, highlighting the rarity and significance of this historical artifact.
