**Srinagar, September 12:** Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chief and former Member of Parliament, Engineer Rashid, has returned to the political scene in Kashmir after spending over five years in Tihar Jail on terror funding charges. His release on interim bail has injected a new element into the political discourse ahead of the upcoming elections.
Rashid, known for his outspoken views, has declared his support for the INDIA alliance, but only if they guarantee a resolution in Parliament for the restoration of Article 370. He also pledged to stage an unprecedented protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence in New Delhi if his party secures a strong mandate in the elections.
Rashid’s return has drawn criticism from other political parties. He has questioned the National Conference (NC)’s past performance in power, accusing them of failing to deliver on their promises. He also attacked the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), blaming them for facilitating the BJP’s entry into Kashmir.
Rashid has further targeted NC Vice President Omar Abdullah, referencing his role in the execution of Muhammad Afzal Guru. He has also criticized the brief detentions of other political leaders, drawing a contrast with his own lengthy imprisonment.
While open to aligning with other parties, Rashid has made it clear that he will only join forces with those who present a concrete plan for restoring Article 370.
With the elections looming, Engineer Rashid’s re-entry into the political arena is sure to add further fuel to the already heated debate in Kashmir, particularly regarding the contentious issue of Article 370.
