**Los Angeles, CA -** A wildfire dubbed the Bridge Fire erupted in the hills near Los Angeles, causing widespread damage and forcing evacuations. The blaze, fueled by a punishing heat wave and strong winds, exploded in size overnight, increasing its footprint by 1,000 percent by Wednesday.
At least 33 homes, several cabins, and a ski resort were destroyed as the fire swept through the towns of Wrightwood and Mt Baldy. “We live in the canyon so that fire was coming right in there, and you couldn’t take anything out of there,” said local resident Jenny Alaniz, who was forced to evacuate her home.
The Bridge Fire is one of three major blazes currently burning around Los Angeles, adding to the already intense wildfire season plaguing the region. The Airport Fire, burning to the southeast of the city, has charred over 22,000 acres and caused seven injuries. The Line Fire, located northeast of Los Angeles, has consumed nearly 35,000 acres, forcing evacuations in popular tourist areas.
While the Bridge Fire has caused significant damage, the Mountain High ski resort, caught in the fire’s path, reported minimal damage to its main lifts and buildings. However, rescue efforts are underway for three people, including a sheriff’s deputy, trapped in a remote area near Mt. Baldy due to thick smoke and blocked roads.
The heat wave that has gripped southern California for a week is finally showing signs of easing, offering hope that lower temperatures might make fighting the fires easier.
Experts attribute the severity of this year’s wildfire season to the abundance of vegetation growth following two unusually wet winters. The recent long, hot summer has dried out the vegetation, providing ample fuel for the fires.
While wildfires are a natural part of the wilderness cycle, the current situation highlights the increasing threat posed by climate change and the need for proactive fire prevention and mitigation strategies.
