Thu Sep 12 16:36:00 UTC 2024: ## Multiple Firefighters Injured Battling Blaze in Lowell Multi-Family Building
**LOWELL, MA** – A fire erupted on Thursday afternoon at a multi-family building on 73 Aiken Street in Lowell, sending several firefighters to the hospital. The incident left one civilian with smoke inhalation and raised concerns about the safety of some pets.
Thick plumes of smoke were visible from the sky as firefighters arrived to tackle the blaze, which originated in the building’s roof. Lowell Fire Chief Phil Charron described the firefighting efforts as labor-intensive, with numerous hot spots burning in the walls and attic spaces.
The fire’s intensity forced firefighters to evacuate the building after flames rapidly spread through the attic. Several firefighters had to escape through a window after being caught inside.
“We had up to 11 firefighters evaluated by (Emergency Medical Services) and four were transported to area hospitals in stable, non-life-threatening conditions,” Charron stated.
While no residents required rescue, one resident, Rocelia Cruz, described a harrowing experience. “They opened their door, and they were just hit with flames,” she said.
The historic building, constructed in 1890, has six rental units. The extent of the damage is deemed “severe,” according to Chief Charron. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
