**PLANO, Texas (September 13, 2024) –** The Toyota Prius has achieved a new Guinness World Record for fuel efficiency, demonstrating its continued innovation and commitment to sustainability.
Hypermiler Wayne Gerdes drove a Prius LE from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall, achieving a remarkable average fuel economy of 93.158 miles per gallon (MPG) for the entire journey. This shatters the previous record of around 70 MPG, showcasing the remarkable fuel efficiency of the Prius.
“The Prius has impressed us all for the past 23 years, and frankly, it continues to surprise us today,” stated Michael Tripp, Vice President of Toyota Vehicle Marketing Group. “This MPG world record is further evidence that the Prius is truly an engineering marvel.”
Gerdes’ 3,211.7-mile cross-country journey faced a variety of terrains and unpredictable weather conditions. He traversed mountainous elevations reaching up to 7,000 feet and endured harsh conditions like the Mojave Desert where temperatures exceeded 105 degrees Fahrenheit. This achievement proves that the Prius can achieve exceptional fuel efficiency even under challenging circumstances.
“For a record attempt like this, there is a lot of planning involved,” said Gerdes. “You can’t just jump in and do this. You have to have a plan. But you also have to be able to adapt on the fly. So, if things change, you have to change your plan. Redirect. Figure out what you can do to achieve that goal.”
Gerdes shared simple tips for everyday drivers to improve their fuel economy. These include accelerating gently from stops, maintaining a consistent pressure on the accelerator pedal, and utilizing engine braking by releasing the accelerator early before stops to use momentum to coast.
The latest generation Toyota Prius, launched in 2023, features a sporty new exterior design, enhanced technology, and up to 57 MPG combined, according to the EPA. It is powered by the fifth generation Toyota Hybrid System and a 2.0-liter engine, generating 194 horsepower in the front-wheel drive model.
This Guinness World Record is the 30th industry award for the new generation Prius. Other notable accolades include Car and Driver’s 10 Best, MotorTrend’s Car of the Year, North American Car of the Year, and the World Car Design of the Year.
Toyota continues to demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable future by offering a variety of electrified vehicles across various segments.
