**London, England -** Former England captain Alan Shearer believes that interim manager Lee Carsley has already unlocked the potential of Trent Alexander-Arnold in a way Gareth Southgate couldn’t. Alexander-Arnold, playing in his favoured right-back role, delivered two standout performances for England in recent friendlies, earning Man of the Match honours in both matches.
Shearer, speaking to Betfair, highlighted the newfound freedom Alexander-Arnold exhibited under Carsley, something he lacked under Southgate’s management. “I think he put in two player-of-the-match performances and I think he summed up what may have been missing in terms of the freedom people mention,” Shearer said. “In his previous role, he wasn’t really trusted in doing what he’s done over the last couple of games.”
Southgate’s experiment with Alexander-Arnold in midfield at Euro 2024 proved unsuccessful, but Carsley has returned him to his natural position, allowing him to showcase his exceptional passing range, crossing ability, and attacking threat. “Trent is an unbelievable talent,” Shearer emphasized. “His ability to find players making runs is incredible, and there aren’t many England players who can do what he can do.”
Shearer also lauded the resurgence of Jack Grealish, who impressed with his dynamic play and freedom under Carsley, reminiscent of his early days at Aston Villa. The former England striker believes Grealish’s challenge now lies in securing regular playing time at Manchester City, which would solidify his place in the national team.
“If Jack can play on a regular basis for Man City, it’ll be very difficult for the England manager not to pick him,” Shearer concluded. “The Grealish we’ve seen in the last two games for England leaves no doubt he can be a huge asset for England.”
The positive performances of Alexander-Arnold and Grealish under Carsley have injected optimism into the English setup, suggesting that a change in approach could unlock the full potential of these talented players.
