Thu Sep 12 01:26:32 UTC 2024: ## Asia’s Top Clubs Battle for Glory in AFC Champions League

The AFC Champions League Elite, Asia’s premier club competition, is heating up, with teams from across the continent vying for the prestigious title. This year’s tournament features a diverse range of clubs from East Asia (China, Japan, South Korea) and West Asia (Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia), as well as Australia, which joined the AFC from Oceania in 2007.

The AFC Champions League traces its roots back to the 1960s, but the modern competition began in 1985 as the Asian Club Championship. In 2002, it merged with the Asian Cup Winners’ Cup and the Asian Super Cup to create the AFC Champions League we know today.

Similar to its European counterpart, the UEFA Champions League, the AFC Champions League features a group stage followed by a knockout round. However, due to the vastness of Asia and the number of participating nations, the ten groups of four are divided into West and East regions.

Only the group winners automatically advance to the Round of 16. While the top three second-place teams from each region also qualify, two runners-up are eliminated, adding an extra layer of competition and intrigue.

Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal currently holds the record for most titles with four wins, followed by South Korea’s Pohang Steelers with three. The competition boasts a diverse range of champions, with 11 clubs holding two titles and 11 others having won once.

While the tournament is younger than the UEFA Champions League, it has already seen a greater number of clubs lift the trophy. Additionally, 11 countries have seen their clubs win the AFC Champions League, mirroring the number of European nations with Champions League titles.

South Korea leads the way with 12 titles, followed by Japan and Saudi Arabia with seven and six respectively. Al-Hilal has been a dominant force in recent years, reaching the final three times in the last five years and winning two of those titles.

The AFC Champions League is a thrilling spectacle for soccer fans around the world, showcasing the best clubs in Asia and offering a glimpse into the vibrant and competitive landscape of Asian football.
