Wed Sep 11 09:45:26 UTC 2024: ## Tiny Ticks Pose Big Threat in Virginia: Experts Urge Vigilance
LYNCHBURG, Va. – With the arrival of warmer weather, Virginia residents are being warned about the presence of tiny, but dangerous, seed ticks. These larvae, barely visible to the naked eye, can carry diseases such as Lyme Disease and Alpha Gal.
Scott Baker, an agent with the Virginia Cooperative Extension, emphasizes the importance of vigilant tick checks, particularly for seed ticks. “They’re so small, they can easily go unnoticed,” he said.
Baker advises against trying to remove ticks with bare fingers, stressing the importance of using dedicated tick removal tools. “You need to get the entire tick off, including the head,” he explained. “Leaving the head embedded in the skin can lead to complications.”
To protect themselves and their pets, residents are urged to take preventative measures. These include using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and treating pets with tick collars or pour-on treatments. Baker also recommends tucking pant legs inside socks, especially for outdoor enthusiasts.
“While these tiny ticks may seem insignificant, they can pose a serious health risk,” Baker cautioned. “Early detection and proper removal are key to preventing potential complications.”
