**BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA -** Veteran Brisbane Lions midfielder Jarryd Lyons has announced he will retire at the end of the club’s 2024 finals campaign. The 32-year-old, who has played 194 games across three clubs, made the announcement to teammates on Tuesday.
Lyons, who previously played for Adelaide and Gold Coast, has been hampered by injuries this season, only managing three AFL games in 2024. Despite the limited game time, he expressed immense gratitude for his time with the Lions, crediting the club with revitalizing his career.
“My career was at a bit of a crossroads, and this club gave me a lifeline,” Lyons said. “It could have just been a fledgling 100-game career, but you turned it into something that I am incredibly proud of.”
Lyons joined the Lions in 2018 and quickly established himself as a key player in their midfield. His performances in 2021 were particularly impressive, earning him a ninth-place finish in the Brownlow Medal count.
“Over the next five or six years after arriving, he became one of the best midfielders in the AFL,” said Brisbane coach Chris Fagan. “He became one of the toughest guys to play against, one of the best stoppage players, one of the guys with the best hands and best footy brains.”
Despite his career being cut short due to injury, Lyons leaves a lasting legacy on the Brisbane Lions. His contributions on and off the field have been instrumental in the club’s recent rise up the AFL ladder.
The club will look to honor Lyons’ career in the coming weeks as they aim to make a deep run into the finals, with the midfielder hopeful they can go all the way.
