Thu Sep 12 06:23:00 UTC 2024: ## Kate Garraway Wins NTA for Heartbreaking Documentary About Late Husband

**London, UK** – Kate Garraway, presenter of Good Morning Britain, won the Authorised Documentary award at the National Television Awards on Wednesday evening for her deeply personal film “Derek’s Story.” The film chronicles the health battles of her late husband, Derek Draper, who tragically passed away in January 2024 after a long illness brought on by COVID-19.

Garraway, visibly emotional during her acceptance speech, revealed the heart-wrenching question she faced while filming: “Is it right to carry on?” she said. “It was heartbreaking that he passed away, but actually, he wanted to do it, so we wanted to do it.”

The documentary, Garraway said, was Derek’s way of “speaking up for the people that have supported me, the family, but also those around me and the people within the care system.”

Garraway expressed the bittersweet nature of the award, acknowledging the pain of celebrating without Derek. “It’s very bitter to be here,” she told the crowd, “We’re halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthday, without Derek.”

The documentary, which has been praised for its honest and moving portrayal of Derek’s journey, is dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by those struggling with long-term illness and their families.

Garraway also spoke about the backlash she received for continuing to discuss Derek’s story, but she felt a responsibility to continue the fight for support for those affected by long-term illness.

“One of the biggest frustrations was that he felt like a total failure,” she said. “He felt like an incredible burden on the carers, on the system, on us. Making this documentary was his way of saying ‘I’m gonna speak up for the people that have supported me, the family, but also those around me and the people within the care system.'”
