**Kolkata, October 12, 2023:** After over a month of protesting, Kolkata doctors will finally meet with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today at 6 pm. The meeting comes amidst a heated standoff following the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College in August.
The doctors, who have been camping outside the state health secretariat, Swasthya Bhawan, are demanding justice for the victim, accountability for those involved in the alleged cover-up, and the resignation of several top officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner and the Health Secretary.
The doctors’ demands also include safe working conditions for healthcare staff in state hospitals. They claim that allegations of corruption and negligence within the state healthcare apparatus have come to light following the incident, leading to the arrest of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, by the CBI for alleged financial irregularities.
The protesting doctors have defied a Supreme Court directive to return to duty by September 10, maintaining their stance until their demands are met. The doctors have set up temporary shelters at their protest site, signaling their determination to continue the protest until their demands are met.
The meeting with the Chief Minister is seen as a significant step towards resolving the crisis. It remains to be seen whether the meeting will bring an end to the ongoing protests and lead to concrete action from the state government.
