**Kolkata, India** – Junior doctors in West Bengal continue to protest, defying a Supreme Court order to return to work, following the rape and murder of their colleague at a Kolkata hospital in August. Despite the court’s warning of disciplinary action, the doctors remain steadfast in their demands, which include the resignation of key officials and a live televised meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The doctors rejected a second offer for talks from the state government, stating that the proposed meeting with the chief minister should include a 30-member delegation and be broadcasted live on news channels. They also demanded the resignation of the principal secretary of health, the director of health services and the director of medical education.
The West Bengal government expressed disappointment at the doctors’ response, calling on them to adhere to the Supreme Court order. However, the protesting doctors maintain that their demands are not politically motivated but crucial for an open and productive discussion.
Meanwhile, the father of the slain doctor has criticized the state government and hospital authorities for a supposed “cover-up” in the investigation, alleging that there is a wider conspiracy involving the college principal and other officials. He expressed confidence in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is now investigating the case, but believes that multiple individuals are involved in the crime.
The doctors’ ongoing protests highlight their concerns about security and the threat culture within West Bengal’s medical institutions. They are demanding justice for their colleague and a systemic change to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals.
