Thu Sep 12 06:15:56 UTC 2024: ## Werribee Open Range Zoo Welcomes New Addition: “Jabulani” the Rhino Calf

**Werribee, Victoria** – The Werribee Open Range Zoo has announced the name of its newest resident: a male southern white rhino calf named Jabulani. The name, meaning “rejoice” in Zulu, was chosen by members and donors of Zoos Victoria in an online competition.

Jabulani, born on August 18th to parents Kipenzi and Kifaru, is already a star attraction. The calf is thriving, drinking up to 14 liters of his mother’s milk per day and gaining an impressive 5-10 kilograms per week.

“He’s so confident and inquisitive,” says Savannah Keeper Sophie Gray. “We’re even seeing him participate in some mock charges, which is a cute way for him to assert his dominance.”

While Jabulani and Kipenzi are currently bonding in a private area, visitors will soon be able to meet the energetic calf when he joins the zoo’s savannah.

The birth of Jabulani is a significant event, highlighting the crucial role of zoos in the conservation of endangered species. Southern white rhinos are classified as Near Threatened, with an estimated 10,080 remaining in the wild. The Australasian Southern White Rhino Zoo Breeding Program, which Werribee Open Range Zoo is a part of, plays a vital role in safeguarding the future of these majestic creatures through breeding programs, education, and community engagement.
