**TEL AVIV, ISRAEL** – Nearly one year after the deadly Hamas attack on Israel, Israeli bookstores are overflowing with books documenting the experience, reflecting the nation’s deep desire to process the trauma of that day.
AFP’s survey of roughly 50 Hebrew-language titles reveals a diverse range of works, from poignant testimonies of survivors to comic strips and even a posthumously published poetry collection by a victim.
Israeli-Belgian cartoonist Michel Kichka emphasizes the importance of this literary output, stating it’s crucial for “building a stone for the building that will recount this day for history.”
The attack on October 7th resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people, mostly civilians, and the capture of 251 hostages, with 97 still held in the Gaza Strip. While the majority of books focus on the experience in Israel, photojournalist Ziv Koren includes images taken in Gaza during the Israeli military’s retaliatory offensive.
Many of the titles highlight the solidarity and resilience of Israeli society, particularly in the face of the military’s initial slow response to the attack. The emotional impact of these narratives is evident in the popularity of testimonies, with readers drawn to the raw, personal accounts.
Sociologist Eva Illouz argues that writing allows people to confront and process difficult emotions, with her upcoming book, “October 8: Intellectual Genealogy of a Righteous Hatred,” analyzing the response of the international left to the attack.
These books serve as a collective response to the tragedy, offering a platform for grieving, healing, and preserving the memory of those lost and the heroism displayed during those tumultuous days.
