**Bengaluru, India:** Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has sparked a debate in the education sector by criticizing the reliance on coaching classes. While attending the launch of the 13th edition of Paul Hewitt’s book Conceptual Physics in Bengaluru, Murthy asserted that coaching classes are unnecessary and only cater to students who lack focus in regular school.
He strongly believes that parental involvement is crucial for a child’s academic success. Murthy shared that he and his wife, Sudha Murty, dedicated three hours daily to teaching their children, Akshata and Rohan, during their school years. This involved a dedicated study session from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, followed by another session from 9 pm to 11 pm.
Murthy emphasizes the responsibility of parents in creating a conducive learning environment at home. He believes that parents cannot expect their children to study diligently while they indulge in entertainment themselves. “While we are working on strengthening STEM education in India, it is important that our students have world-class resources,” said Murthy, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to education.
Murthy’s remarks come amidst a growing trend of students enrolling in coaching classes across India, particularly for competitive exams like IIT and NIT. While many parents see these classes as a solution to academic challenges, Murthy’s stance emphasizes the importance of self-discipline, parental guidance, and a focus on fundamental education within the school system.
