Tue Sep 10 17:02:00 UTC 2024: ## Former Inmate Credits Tauranga Transitional Housing for Turning His Life Around

**Tauranga, New Zealand** – A Tauranga man who once struggled with addiction and homelessness has praised Takitimu House, a local transitional housing facility, for helping him rebuild his life. Aaron de Ridder, who spent 16 months at the facility from March 2021 to July 2022, shared his story at Takitimu House’s 10-year anniversary celebration on September 4.

De Ridder, who had a history of recidivist offending and imprisonment, found himself “at rock bottom” after being released from prison. He had lost his mother and “everything that mattered” to him. With the support of Takitimu House staff, he was able to overcome his challenges and become a contributing member of the community.

“This service is truly one in a million, a beacon of light when you find yourself at rock bottom,” De Ridder said. He described how the facility provided him with love, support, structure, routine, dignity, and respect, helping him stay clean and reconnect with his children.

De Ridder now works full-time for Ngāi Te Rangi, helping people struggling with addiction. He is also an active father to his three daughters and a member of the Takitimu House board of trustees. He lives independently in his own flat.

“I am proud of who I am, I am a proud and contributing member of our community,” he said.

Takitimu House, which opened in September 2014, has provided support to over 2000 men in the last 10 years. The facility provides a roof over their heads and offers a range of services, including social work, mental health support, budgeting advice, and connection to other community organizations.

“Our model works, we would love to see our model for homeless people replicated across the country,” said Takitimu House operations manager Annamarie Angus.

De Ridder’s story highlights the positive impact that Takitimu House has had on the lives of many men in Tauranga. The facility has helped countless individuals find a path to recovery, reclaim their lives, and contribute to the community.
