Anantapur: Mumbai all-rounders Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian emerged as heroes for India A in a thrilling second round match of the Duleep Trophy 2024 against India D. The duo rescued their team from a precarious 93 for 5, ultimately guiding them to a respectable 288 for 8 at stumps.
Mulani, who was instrumental in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy triumph last season, remained unbeaten on a gritty 88. The left-handed batter smashed eight boundaries and three sixes in a valiant knock against a formidable bowling attack. His 91-run partnership with Kotian for the seventh wicket was crucial in keeping India A in the hunt.
While Ishan Kishan’s century in the other Duleep Trophy match between India B and India C stole the headlines, it was Mulani and Kotian’s fighting spirit that truly captivated the crowd.
India D got off to a strong start, thanks to Karnataka fast bowler Vidwath Kaverappa who dismissed both openers, Pratham Singh and Mayank Agarwal, cheaply. Riyan Parag then took the attack to Arshdeep Singh, who is seeking to earn a place in the national Test team. However, for the third time in the tournament, Parag threw away his promising start, falling to Arshdeep for 37.
Arshdeep, despite taking two wickets, including that of Parag, conceded at 4.10 per over. He is being assessed by national selectors as they search for a left-arm pace option for the upcoming Test season.
India A continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, but Mulani and Kotian’s crucial partnership stalled India D’s charge with the ball.
Saurabh Kumar eventually broke the partnership, dismissing Kotian for 53, giving India D a glimmer of hope. However, Mulani found a new ally in Prasidh Krishna, who returned to action after another injury layoff. Krishna contributed 34 runs before being dismissed by Harshit Rana.
At stumps, Mulani was joined by Khaleel Ahmed, who scored a quick 15 from just 14 balls, adding vital runs in the final hour of play.
This dramatic encounter showcased the resilience of Mulani and Kotian and highlighted the competitive nature of the Duleep Trophy as teams battle for a place in the national team.
