Wed Sep 11 05:09:00 UTC 2024: ## Australia’s Renewable Energy Revolution: Batteries Hold the Key to a Sustainable Future

**Melbourne, Australia** – With abundant renewable energy sources like solar and wind, Australia is poised to become a global leader in energy storage, according to Scott Hamilton, an adjunct associate professor at Monash University. While renewable energy is intermittent, meaning it’s not always available when needed, energy storage technologies like batteries can ensure a reliable and sustainable power supply.

Hamilton, a senior advisor to the Smart Energy Council and a non-executive director of Hi Neighbour Ltd, highlights the critical role of energy storage in bridging the gaps left by retiring coal-fired power stations. “Energy storage is the special sauce that makes renewables work anytime, anywhere, and everywhere,” he says.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) predicts that sufficient storage will be crucial for maintaining electricity reliability as the country transitions to a renewable energy future. Investments in storage capacity are already increasing, with notable projects like the 300 megawatt Victorian Big Battery and the 850 megawatt Waratah Super Battery.

Beyond large-scale batteries, the government is also promoting the adoption of home battery storage, which can help reduce household energy bills and improve grid resilience. The payback period for small-scale batteries is now within the product’s lifetime, making the upfront cost more worthwhile.

Hamilton stresses the importance of government incentives to accelerate the adoption of both large and small-scale batteries. “With the right ambition and policy settings, we could have similar rates of uptake in home batteries – going from about 250,000 at the moment to more than one million by 2030,” he says.

However, the focus shouldn’t solely be on batteries. Other long-duration energy storage technologies, such as pumped hydro, green gravity, and green hydrogen, are also crucial for a fully sustainable energy system.

“Australia has the technology to empower communities, create thousands of new jobs and help save the planet,” Hamilton concludes. “If we’re smart about it, we can even get by with fewer transmission lines and less bulky electricity infrastructure.”

With the right policies and investments, Australia has the potential to lead the world in renewable energy and energy storage, paving the way for a more sustainable and secure future.
