Mon Sep 09 16:12:39 UTC 2024: ## Blue Jays’ Loperfido Embraces Data and Evolution in His Hitting Approach

**Toronto, ON** – Joey Loperfido, the 25-year-old outfielder acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays in a July trade, has been adjusting to major league pitching, but he’s doing so with a meticulous approach. Despite a slow start statistically, Loperfido is confident in his ability to produce, having a proven track record in the minor leagues.

In an interview with FanGraphs writer David Laurila, Loperfido discussed his evolving hitting philosophy, highlighting the balance between the science of data analysis and the art of feel. He explained how his approach has changed throughout his career, from his simpler swing in college to a more stable back hip stance in the majors.

“I think any time you have to make an adjustment… I feel like I’ve made a bunch, whether it was when I got to the varsity team in high school, got into college, transitioned into the minor leagues, and then obviously into the major leagues,” Loperfido shared. “Your feel of just being able to naturally hit can require some adjustments to get back to that clarity and freedom.”

Loperfido embraces the use of data, acknowledging its role in informing his decisions at the plate, but he also emphasizes the importance of relying on feel and intuition. “I think you always look at that data with a grain of salt,” he said, “but it’s good to have the information. The more information you have, the more informed decisions you can make as a hitter.”

He credits his time spent with veteran players like Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve in Houston and now Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer in Toronto for his continued development. Loperfido recognizes the individual nature of hitting but believes that observing the approaches of successful players has proven beneficial.

“Everybody produces a dude in their own way,” he said, “but kind of seeing how everybody gets themself ready to do that is cool. It’s cool to see behind the scenes.”

While Loperfido’s early major league career hasn’t been as explosive as his minor league performances, his commitment to constant evolution and his willingness to blend data with instinct suggests he’s well-equipped to navigate the challenges of MLB hitting. The Blue Jays and their fans will be eager to see how his approach translates into more consistent success at the highest level.
