**RIGA, LATVIA & BUCHAREST, ROMANIA** – Over the weekend, Russian drones crossed into the airspace of two NATO countries, Latvia and Romania, marking the latest escalation in the conflict in Ukraine reaching the alliance’s eastern flank.
Latvia confirmed on Sunday that a Russian drone crashed in the east of the country on Saturday, likely after entering from Belarus, a Russian ally. Latvia’s defense minister, Andris Sprūds, stated that the incident underscored the need to strengthen the country’s border defenses, particularly in terms of anti-aircraft and electronic warfare capabilities.
Meanwhile, Romania’s foreign ministry condemned the violation of its airspace by Russian drones targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. The Romanian defense ministry confirmed that two Romanian F-16s scrambled after detecting a drone entering Romanian airspace before heading towards Ukraine. While the drone’s impact zone was likely in an uninhabited area near the town of Periprava, the incident raised serious concerns.
These incidents, while not considered intentional attacks, have significantly heightened tensions between NATO and Russia. NATO’s deputy secretary general, Mircea Geoană, acknowledged the irresponsibility and potential danger of the drone incursions, even though there is no evidence of a deliberate attack against NATO members.
Lithuania’s foreign minister, Gabrielius Landsbergis, expressed his dismay, stating that “nothing should be landing on Ukraine, or Latvia, or anywhere on NATO territory.” He emphasized the need for a strong allied response.
Ukraine’s new foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, described the incidents as a stark reminder of Russia’s aggressive actions extending beyond Ukraine.
These events follow previous incidents involving Russian drones in Polish and Belarusian airspace, further illustrating the escalating tensions in the region.
