Time Magazine’s decision to exclude Elon Musk from its second annual “100 Most Influential People in AI” list has caused a stir online, with many criticizing the magazine’s selection process and accusing it of bias. The list, which features actress Scarlett Johansson alongside other AI leaders on its cover, has been met with skepticism due to the absence of Musk, a prominent figure in the AI field.
Musk’s companies, Tesla and xAI, have made significant advancements in artificial intelligence and self-driving technology. His chatbot, Grok, is gaining traction in the market, rivaling competitors like ChatGPT.
Social media users have voiced their discontent, questioning Time’s impartiality and accusing the magazine of a “personal vendetta” against Musk. The inclusion of Scarlett Johansson, who recently clashed with OpenAI over the alleged unauthorized use of her voice for a chatbot, further fuels the controversy. Other unexpected entries like Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor and YouTuber Marques Brownlee have also raised questions about the list’s criteria.
Concerns have also been raised about Time’s ownership by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, whose company has invested heavily in Anthropic, an AI startup. While the magazine discloses its connections to companies backed by Salesforce Ventures, some speculate that this relationship may have influenced the list’s composition.
Time’s Editor in Chief, Sam Jacobs, defended the list, emphasizing the rapidly evolving nature of AI and noting that 91 of the members on the 2024 list were new additions. He stated that the list highlights “the possibilities for AI when it moves out of the lab and into the world.” However, the controversy surrounding Musk’s omission and the inclusion of unexpected names continues to raise questions about the magazine’s selection process and its credibility.
