**Washington D.C.** – Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has raised concerns about former President Donald Trump’s mental fitness after Trump gave an incoherent response to a question about child care last week.
During an appearance at the Economic Club of New York, Trump was asked if he would prioritize legislation to make child care affordable. Instead of addressing the issue directly, he launched into a rambling response about raising tariffs on foreign nations.
“I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I’m talking about, because child care is child care, you have to have it in this country. You have to have it,” Trump said. “But when you talk about those numbers compared to the type of numbers I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to, but they’ll get used to it very quickly.”
Buttigieg, appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, criticized Trump’s response and questioned his grasp of the issue. “And as we saw when Donald Trump was asked about child care the other day, it wasn’t clear whether he even understood the question,” Buttigieg said.
He contrasted Trump’s response with Vice President Kamala Harris’s plan to expand the Child Tax Credit and ensure paid family leave for Americans. Buttigieg highlighted that these policies would already be in place if not for Republican opposition.
Buttigieg further emphasized the stark differences between Trump’s policies and those of the current administration, pointing to Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy and his efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The Secretary’s comments add fuel to the ongoing debate about Trump’s mental and cognitive capabilities. This incident has reignited discussions about his fitness for office and the potential impact of his rhetoric on national policy.
