Mon Sep 09 15:21:17 UTC 2024: ## Beluga Whale “Hvaldimir” Found Dead: No Foul Play Suspected

**OSLO, Norway -** The death of Hvaldimir, a beluga whale that had gained international attention for his unusual harness and suspected Russian ties, has been ruled as likely due to natural causes, Norwegian police announced Monday.

The whale, who had been dubbed “Hvaldimir” – a play on the Norwegian word for whale and his alleged connection to Moscow – was discovered dead on August 31st in a bay on Norway’s southwestern coast. Speculation arose after animal rights organizations NOAH and One Whale claimed he had been shot and filed a police report.

However, a preliminary report from the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, which conducted an autopsy, found no evidence of human activity contributing to Hvaldimir’s death.

“There is nothing in the autopsy that indicates that Hvaldimir was shot,” said police official Amund Preede Revheim, noting superficial wounds that did not affect any vital organs.

The autopsy revealed the whale’s stomach was empty, suggesting possible starvation. A stick was also found lodged in his mouth, and his organs were reportedly deteriorated.

Despite the police findings, some remain skeptical. Regina Crosby Haug, head of One Whale, maintains she saw bullet wounds on Hvaldimir’s body, and NOAH has offered a reward for information about the cause of death.

Hvaldimir, estimated to be between 15 and 20 years old, was relatively young for a beluga, which typically live up to 35 years. He first appeared off the coast of Norway in 2019, sporting a harness with the words “Equipment St. Petersburg” printed on it. This led to speculation that the whale may have escaped from a Russian Navy training program.

While Moscow never officially responded to the claims, Hvaldimir’s story sparked international curiosity and raised questions about the potential use of marine animals in military operations.
