**HONG KONG, Sept. 9, 2024** – The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust hosted its fourth Philanthropy for Better Cities (PBC) Forum today, officially kicking off Hong Kong Philanthropy Week. The two-day event, held at the West Kowloon Cultural District, brought together over 2,000 delegates and nearly 100 speakers from 40 countries and regions, including representatives from over 200 foundations.
The forum, themed “Delivering Impactful Philanthropy in the Real World”, aimed to foster dialogue and exchange transformative ideas on how to translate philanthropic action into tangible, sustainable impact. It featured keynote speeches and panel discussions, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities of philanthropy in Asia, particularly in a context vastly different from Western models.
HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee, in a video address, highlighted the forum as a testament to Hong Kong’s commitment to philanthropy, emphasizing the city’s ambition to become a global center for philanthropy.
The opening ceremony was officiated by HKSAR Government Chief Secretary for Administration Chan Kwok-ki, Hong Kong Jockey Club Chairman Michael Lee, and Club CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges. Mr. Lee, in his welcome speech, underscored the need for contextualized models and solutions to address the specific needs of Asian societies, emphasizing the crucial role of philanthropy in tackling shared social and environmental challenges.
The forum featured prominent speakers, including Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia, and Nobel Laureate Professor Michael Spence. The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Collaboration between the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and three local universities to strengthen epidemic monitoring and response in the Greater Bay Area.
The forum, supported by the Club’s integrated business model, serves as a key initiative in its broader efforts to promote philanthropy and contribute to the betterment of society.
